Congregation Beth Or is a growing congregation of approximately
120 member families. Our Vision Statement and
Mission Statement stress our respect for pluralism and diversity, and
our membership reflects those qualities. Our congregants come from many walks
of life and diverse backgrounds. Some were raised in traditionally observant
homes, others in secular or culturally Jewish homes. Many were unaffiliated
before joining Beth Or. Because of our distinctive character as a progressive
Reform congregation, we draw people from a wide geographic radius. Members come
from as far away as Chicago, Oak Park, Elgin, Barrington, and Crystal Lake, as
well as from the North Shore suburbs.
Intermarried families find Beth Or a comfortable home. The
non-Jewish partners and children participate fully in all aspects of
congregational life, and their personal religious backgrounds add to the
richness of our congregational fabric.
Our membership reflects a broad range of religious views. In a setting where no
one is judged on the basis of his or her belief, our members feel free to
express and examine their ideas. At Beth Or, the ongoing search for truth and
understanding is what matters.
Newcomers find Beth Or an
unusually friendly congregation. They quickly feel at home and find it
easy to become actively involved. Our congregants show genuine interest in and
concern about each other. We enjoy learning, celebrating, serving, and
socializing together.
